Free screen capture
The free screen capture utility in Windows and other available screen capture software are very easy to use, even for someone with only the most basic computer skills. Screenshots are useful for a variety of purposes. The good thing is that you can take a shot of your entire monitor screen or selected parts of it in a couple of simple steps and at no cost. There are many instances in which a screenshot can come in handy. You may be able to use screenshots for office or school presentations, or even personal e-mails. Taking free screen capture screenshots may be the easiest way to capture and use any image on your computer screen without even using an external camera. You can copy entire passages of text and include adjacent pictures without changing their layout or the way they appear on screen. This is the most basic thing you need to know about free screen capture: that you already have this function available in your computer and literally right under your nose. You might have overlooked or ignored that 'Print Screen' key that's been on your keyboard all this time. By simply pressing 'Print Screen,' you take a picture of your entire monitor screen that you can paste directly to any MS Office document. By hitting 'Alt' and 'Print Screen' at the same time, you'll be capturing only your active window. But don't go searching for that image you just took in any of your file folders. Screenshots in Windows, unlike in Mac OS, are not automatically saved but are only temporarily held in your computer's memory until your next screenshot. This means that you have to paste it on to your document in MS Word, PowerPoint, or even Excel, to see the image. You can also use MS Paint to save it into an image file in any of the basic formats (bmp, jpeg, tiff, gif, png). If you want to be more selective in capturing images on your screen, you can try certain free screen capture software available for download online. One Windows XP-compatible program that is easy to download and use is Snippy. Snippy is only 84 KB in size and takes mere seconds to save to your computer. Installation is also a snap, and once you have it running on the lower right corner of your screen, you can start 'snipping' selected areas displayed on your monitor. Like, 'Print Screen,' the screenshots taken by Snippy are only temporarily stored and needs pasting, but you can also manually save these snippets by right-clicking the scissors icon and choosing 'Save as….' To use it, left-click the scissors icon and the pen tool will appear. You can use the pen in free-form to mark the area you want to be captured. Pressing the 'Shift' key simultaneously will capture a rectangular area. Settings for border width and color, as well as the 'hotkey' or shortcut key, can likewise be changed. You'll find that taking screenshots is not only easy but also fun to do. The next time there's anything on your monitor that you want to forward in an e-mail or save for future reference, you'll be using this simple process without even thinking about it.
